Biography: Judge Zach Ives has served on the Court of Appeals since 2019, when Governor Michelle Lujan-Grisham appointed him. Judge Ives is a fifth-generation New Mexican who graduated magna cum laude with thesis and clinical honors from the University of New Mexico School of Law in 2000. After law school, Judge Ives served as a law clerk to Chief Justice Pamela B. Minzner. In seventeen years of private practice in New Mexico, Judge Ives handled a wide variety of cases in state and federal courts, including appeals, commercial, personal injury, civil rights, criminal, and adult guardianship.
These cases took Judge Ives to many different cities and towns in New Mexico and in other states. While in private practice, Judge Ives volunteered to handle many matters pro bono and served as court-appointed counsel for a large number of indigent clients. The New Mexico Supreme Court also appointed Judge Ives to serve as a member of the New Mexico Criminal Uniform Jury Instruction Committee and later as the chair of that committee, a position he held for six years.
Judge Ives lives in Albuquerque with his wife and their two children. He enjoys spending time outdoors, listening to live music, and taking photographs.
Clerkship Opportunities: At this time, Judge Ives is not accepting applications for law clerk positions. When a position becomes available, Judge Ives requires a letter of interest, resume, law school transcript, at least two letters of recommendation, and writing sample.
